Those who attended the 8th HEDR Conference would have noticed a lot of attention was paid to self-care. Self-care is essential in DEI work because it supports emotional well-being, ensures sustainable impact, models healthy behaviour, enhances authenticity and empathy, and acknowledges the intersectionality of individuals engaged in this work. Prioritizing self-care allows you to be more effective, resilient, and compassionate in creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world.


Engaging in DEI work can be emotionally demanding and challenging. It involves addressing sensitive topics, confronting systemic injustices, and supporting individuals who have experienced discrimination. Taking care of your emotional well-being is essential to prevent burnout, compassion fatigue, and emotional exhaustion. Self-care practices can help you manage stress, process emotions, and maintain a healthy balance.


DEI work requires long-term commitment and sustained effort. Engaging in self-care practices ensures that you can continue the work over time without depleting your resources. By prioritizing self-care, you can maintain your energy, focus, and motivation, which are crucial for making a sustainable impact in the DEI space.


As a DEI practitioner or advocate, you serve as a role model for others. By practicing self-care, you demonstrate the importance of personal well-being and show others that it is possible to engage in challenging work while also taking care of oneself. This can inspire and encourage others to prioritize their own self-care, fostering a healthier and more sustainable approach to DEI work within the broader community.


Engaging in self-care practices can enhance your self-awareness and help you stay connected to your own experiences and emotions. This self-awareness can lead to greater authenticity in your work and interactions. When you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to empathize with others and create a safe and supportive environment. Self-care acknowledges the intersecting identities and experiences of individuals engaged in DEI work. Different individuals may experience unique challenges and require specific forms of self-care. Recognizing and respecting these differences is crucial for fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. By practicing self-care, you can address your own unique needs while also recognizing and supporting the diverse self-care needs of others.


Here are 5 ways you can practice self-care this summer.


1. Spend time in nature: Take advantage of the pleasant weather and spend time outdoors. Go for a hike, have a picnic in the park, or take a leisurely walk on the beach. Connecting with nature can be rejuvenating and help reduce stress levels.


2. Practice mindfulness and meditation: Set aside some time each day to practice mindfulness or meditation. Find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and focus on your breath or engage in guided meditation. This can help promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and increase overall well-being.


3. Engage in a creative hobby: Summer is a great time to explore your creative side. Pick up a hobby such as painting, drawing, writing, gardening, or playing a musical instrument. Engaging in creative activities can be therapeutic, allowing you to express yourself and find joy in the process.


4. Take a digital detox: Disconnect from technology and take a break from screens. Set aside designated periods during the day or even an entire weekend to disconnect from social media, emails, and work-related tasks. Instead, engage in activities that nourish your soul, such as reading a book, having meaningful conversations with loved ones, or engaging in physical activities.


5. Practice self-care through self-reflection: Use the summer as an opportunity for self-reflection and self-discovery. Journaling can be a helpful practice for introspection. Write down your thoughts, feelings, goals, and aspirations. Set aside time to evaluate your personal growth, celebrate your accomplishments, and identify areas where you can focus on self-improvement.
