About the event
Stories have the power to shape how communities are understood, valued, and supported. In the non-profit sector, the stories we choose—and how we choose to tell them—carry deep responsibility. This full-day workshop equips non-profit leaders, communicators, and frontline staff with the skills to create storytelling practices that are ethical, equity-centred, and trauma-informed.
Participants will explore how identity, power, and culture influence storytelling; learn practical tools for interviewing and narrative development; and build confidence in sharing stories across writing, visual media, and live formats.
Session 1: Why Storytelling Matters
Morning
This session grounds participants in the cultural and historical roots of storytelling. We will explore examples from a range of world traditions and examine how stories shape perceptions of community, belonging, and social issues. Together, we will unpack biases embedded in traditional charity narratives—such as “saviour stories” and “poverty porn”—and explore how DEI-centred storytelling builds trust, legitimacy, and long-term impact.
